Make a difference
Our member volunteers manage a variety of programs to benefit underserved populations in the St. Louis metropolitan region. Each program has a unique delivery model and focus. We provide everything a child needs to wear to do well in school, athletic shoes and socks, personal care items for women and children in shelters, books for aspiring readers, and items to help families through tough times when they can't find help elsewhere.
Assistance League of St. Louis (ALSTL) volunteers joined the Urban League Back-to-School Festival to help families prepare for the new school year.
Twenty dedicated Books from Friends volunteers gave away 3,500 brand-new books—including the custom AL book and Ruby Finds a Worry for families impacted by the recent tornado. The children’s smiles said it all: some couldn’t wait, sitting down right in the AL booth to start reading their new treasures.

Local author Micheal Anderson joined the volunteers and signed her Zoey book. She inspired kids and parents alike—all copies gone by day’s end!
Tom Bailey, Urban League’s Special Events Director, told the volunteers, “It wouldn’t be UL Back-to-School without AL books for the children and families.” Congressman Wesley Bell also stopped by to thank volunteers for the impact they are making.
Moments like this are a reminder that it takes a whole community coming together to uplift families—especially in times of crisis—and to spark a lifelong love of reading.
ALSTL was thankful to be a part of this day of hope and celebration, building brighter futures—one book at a time.
